Steve Fernandez

Retrofitting classic developments & adapting them for the future, leading to an increase in footfall and economic development.

Steve is a Director at Arup which is a global organisation consisting of designers, engineers and sustainability consultants, advisors and experts dedicated to sustainable development, and to use imagination, technology and rigour to shape a better world.

He has worked at Arup for 24 years. He studied Architecture and Structural Engineering and has worked in many different offices at Arup, including Leeds, Manchester, London, New York, Moscow, Dubai and Doha, and he now leads a team across Birmingham and Nottingham. He is a chartered Civil Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers and a Conservation Accredited Engineer (one of only 73 in the UK).

Steve is the global Building Retrofit Leader at Arup and is passionate about existing buildings. He has worked on many high-profile retrofit projects including the redevelopment of St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London, the regeneration of the Newton and Arkwright Buildings in Nottingham and the transformation of Coal Drops Yard at Kings Cross in London. Steve was also a speaker at COP26 in Glasgow talking about how retrofitting existing buildings can help address the climate crisis and has written numerous technical papers on retrofit for the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers as well as co-authoring the book Circular economy and reuse: guidance for designers which was published this year.
